Hive General Admission tickets give you entry to the Science Centre and Art Gallery.

Tickets to the Planetarium are sold separately but include full Hive Access so there is no need to purchase additional General Admission tickets!.

FAMILY SCIENCE DAY at Hive returns with a showcase of amazing science activities. With National Science Week’s theme of Species Survival : Beyond Sustainability, the program includes presentations, extra planetarium shows and an expo of Tasmanian science and Scientists.

SCIENCE CENTRE EXPO

Hive’s Science Centre is going to be overflowing with interactive experiences for all the family, with pop-up stalls by scientists and ecology organisations from across Tasmania.

We will also be joined by four of the incredible Young Tassie Scientists with varying specialisations, who will be presenting a range of hands-on activities.

…and don’t forget there will also be the crowd-favourite Derby Track to test your car engineering skills!!

PLANETARIUM

There are 4 planetarium shows scheduled as part of the Family Science Day program.

Family Science Day show times:

  • 11am: 3-2-1 LIFTOFF! *All ages show

  • 1pm: We are Guardians *Ages 5 +

  • 2pm: From Earth to the Universe * Ages 5+

  • 3pm: Tycho Goes to Mars *All ages show

3-2-1 LIFTOFF! Meet Elon the Hamster, who rescues a space robot who has fallen to Earth and help him to get back into space, in this show that will delight younger audience members.

Will the robot return to his friends who are about to go to Mars? Come along to see 3-2-1 LIFTOFF and find out!

Tycho Goes to Mars sees Tycho – Our favourite space dog, blasting off for the Red Planet. Tycho will explore many of the amazing features of Mars, including the largest volcano in the Solar System! Tycho goes to Mars was produced by the Melbourne Planetarium. *This show is suitable for younger audiences, including under 5s.

We are Guardians – This new show looks at how ecosystems are intrinsically connected, examines the links between human activities and climate change, and how satellites can help us save the planet. *The minimum age for attendance to this show is five years.

From Earth to the Universe – Takes you on a voyage through time and space to see the Universe as revealed to us by science, from our solar system out to the distant galaxies. *The minimum age for attendance to this show is five years.

Planetarium terms and conditions

• Please arrive at Hive at least fifteen minutes before the start of the show.

• All ticket holders are required to check in at Hive Visitor Services on the ground floor before making their way throughout the building.

• Tickets can be purchased at Hive Visitor Services on the ground floor if seats are still available.

• Shows start promptly on the hour, and unfortunately latecomers cannot be admitted once the doors have been closed.

• Visitors who leave the Planetarium during the show cannot be re-admitted.

• The minimum age for Planetarium attendance is 5 years unless otherwise specified.
(11am and 3pm shows are for the younger children and are open to all ages)
